The Rev. Martin Mattingly, 78, of 2501 Old Hartford Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at Carmel Home. Father Mattingly was a native of Curdsville. Father Mattingly's high school and college training was at St. Mary's College, St. Mary, and philosophy and theology at St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore. He was ordained by the Most Rev. Francis R. Cotton on May 30, 1950. He was associate pastor at St. Mary of the Woods, Whitesville, Sacred Heart, Hickman and Immaculate Conception, Hawesville. He served as pastor of St. Anthony's, Browns Valley, St. Leo, Murray (where he had the church, parish hall and rectory built), SS. Peter and Paul, Hopkinsville, St. Francis de Sales, Paducah, and Immaculate Conception in Earlington and Resurrection, Dawson Springs. Father Mattingly taught high school at Immaculate Conception High School from 1952 to 1955 and Brescia College from 1952 to 1961, he was chaplain at Murray State University from 1961 to 1981, and was the executive priest for the Marriage Encounter. He retired in February 2003. Survivors include a sister, Jean Yeand of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews. Father Mattingly was an active member of the Priest's Support Group, Jesu Charitas. An avid distance runner, he has taken part in several running marathons and won several trophies. Visitation will be at Carmel Home from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday and at St. Stephen Cathedral from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, with prayer services at 7 p.m. Funeral liturgy will be on Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen Cathedral, with burial in Resurrection Cemetery.
