Giovanni lost his lifelong battle with a rare autoimmune disorder. He was diagnosed at 5 months old with NEMO, or Nuclear Factor Kappa B Essential Modulator. This set his father into a desperate action to save his boy's life. Together he and his wife rallied to set up bone marrow drives. By March 2007 he had not had a match and doctors performed a stem cell transplant. The surgery was succesful and Giovanni got to go home in May of 2007. He was the smallest student in his kindergarten class at 25 pounds. On April 1st his final crisis occured, precipitated by chronic colitis, becoming comatose, and then loss of brain waves. The loving decison was made to take him off life support.

Getting the message out and urging everyone to be a bone marrow donor became the life passion of Giovanni's father. He organized more than 600 volunteer events, registering nearly 40,000 potential donors. All of this would not have happened without Giovanni, it was like he came to earth to do what he was meant to do.
