Arthur "Gummy" Myers Jr., 88, of Hopewell Twp. died Wednesday evening January 28, 2009 peacefully at home.
The husband of Anne Myers (nee Scull), he was born in Bridgeton and was the son of the late Arthur Myers Sr. and the late Emma Jane Myers (nee Morrison). Mr. Myers had resided at his home in Hopewell Twp. for over thirty-seven years.
Mr. Myers attended Bridgeton High School and was called to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. Trained as an electrician, he served with the 54th Quartermaster Salvage Repair Platoon and also served as their bugler. At the conclusion of the war, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Myers was a machinist who had worked for several companies in Cumberland County, most notably P.J. Ritter Company in Bridgeton and Progresso Foods in Vineland. He retired in 1980.
Mr. Myers was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was an active member of the Quinton Sportsman's Club and the National Rifle Association. He also enjoyed tinkering with different projects in his garage. Mr. Myers was a member of the Red Men during his youth.
In addition to his wife of sixty-nine years, he is survived by four children, Carol Wilson and her husband Richard of Hockessin, DE, Arthur "Butch" Myers III and his wife Charlotte of Pittsgrove Twp., Wayne Myers and his wife Sandra of Pittsgrove and Judy Costa and her husband Anthony of Pennsville, ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, April Wilson DelCollo, one brother, Sherman Myers and one uncle and aunt, Walter and Margaret Morrison.
Friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Monday morning February 2nd at 11 o'clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton with grandson and Army Chaplain, 2LT Christopher W. Myers officiating.
The interment will take place at Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Monday morning between 9:30 and 11 A.M.
