Robert was the first of ten children born to Robert and Sarah Johnson. His younger siblings were James (1819), Maria (1821), Nancy (1823), Andrew J. (1825), Francis (1827), Harriet (1832), Athia (1834), Jane P. (1836) and Amanda (1839). (Birth years are approximate, likely within a year of the actual year.

Robert married Minerva Lemert on 22 Sep 1847 in Marshall Co., Indiana. I found three children for them--Harriet (Jan 1850 - 12 Sep 1869, married Isaac McKessen), Francis "Frank" L. Johnson (18 Jan 1852 - 29 Jun 1926), and Warren M. (12 Jan 1854 - 30 Jul 1906).

Robert lost his father Robert Sr. on 26 Feb. 1854. Robert Jr. died ten months to the day afterwards on 26 Dec. 1854. There is a note on the cemetery record indicating that he was murdered. He was only thirty six years old. Newspaper articles note his killer as Isaac Ash, who struck Robert in the head with a rifle, crushing his skull after some harsh words were exchanged.

I found a marriage record for Robert's widow Minerva to David H. Monroe on 12 Mar 1856 in Marshall Co., Indiana. I found three children for them--Frederick William (19 Mar 1857 - 25 Mar 1914), Charles C. (16 Sep 1858 - 1944), and Robert Schuyler (25 Feb 1861 - 4 Mar 1926).

The Civil War erupted in the spring of 1861 and David H. Monroe served with Co. C of the 54th Indiana Infantry (which mustered out as Co. D). David mustered in on 30 Oct 1862 in Indianapolis and appears to have died during Sherman's Yazoo Expedition, likely near Memphis, Tennessee at the end of December in 1962. His remains may have buried where he fell. Minerva filed for a Civil War Widow's Pension on 7 Feb 1863.

Minerva then married David's younger brother Abel George Monroe on 6 Apr 1865 in St. Joseph, Michigan. They had a son together named Edwin R. (19 Mar 1866 - 12 Oct 1921).

On the 1900 Census, Minerva reported having had nine children, six of whom had survived to that census, but by that decade's census, only son Warren Johnson was still living at home. The other living children were Frank Johnson, Frederick Monroe Charles Monroe, Robert Monroe and Edwin Monroe. Harriet Johnson McKessen was on of the three children Minerva had lost.
