AUGUST BREATHITT
DIES AT AGE OF 87
-----
Veteran Of War Between
States, Spanish American
War Buried In Afternoon
-----
One of the five remaining Federal soldiers of the War Between the States, Augustine Breathitt, 87, the youngest of the five, died last night at the home on Fourteenth Street following an illness of the past two days.

He was one of several sons of a prominent pioneer settler, Maj. John W. Breathitt and was a representative of a family that has furnished both a governor and lieutenant governor and many other leaders for the state of Kentucky as well as in civic and military affairs.

Mr. Breathitt was born Oct. 8, 1849 and was strong and vigorous enough to still serve as a member of the Hopkinsville police force at eighty years of age.

He was slightly more than eleven years of age when the War Between the States broke out and his father and older brothers volunteered for service in the union army and served throughout the struggle. One of his brothers. Peyton Brenthitt, is still living in this county.

Mr. Breathitt entered the Federal army while still a mere boy and served through the last two years of the strife. When the Spanish-American war came, though 47 years of age, he was a volunteer and saw active service in Cuba.

Mr. Breathitt for fifteen years was a deputy sheriff of Christian County and served for a time in the United States revenue service. Later his father was postmaster and he was the assistant in that office. After retiring from the postal service, Mr. Breathitt became a patrolman on the city police force until enfeebled by advancing years. He was so faithful and efficient in service, his tenure was not changed with changes of administration.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church for seventy-five years. The funeral services were held at Riverside Cemetery this afternoon, at 4 o'clock, conducted by his pastor. Dr. P. C. Walker. Mr. Breathitt was married late in life to Miss Annie Fruit who died several years ago. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Kate Griffin and a brother, Peyton Breathitt.
