Jacob, son of Jacob Koppes Berkey and Mary Ann Schrock Berkey, was born in St Joseph County November 3, 1869. He married Amanda Ellen Jones on November 18 1891 in St Joseph County, Indiana. In 1903, Jacob and Ella lived in Elkhart Indiana, and Jacob worked as a blacksmith. The 1912 Elkhart City Directory shows Jacob with occupation 'livery'. Jacob ran a livery stable opposite the Elkhart fire and police station until 1919. The 1920 census shows the family living in Garland, Custer, Montana. They homesteaded the Berkey Ranch on the Tongue River, south of Miles City.

Jacob and Ella had three children: Willis, Nellie B (Markland), and Gladys (Miller), who were born in Indiana.

Jacob died on his ranch March 12, 1937, and was buried in the Custer County Cemetery.
