The son of David & Catherine Deitch, in 1860, he was a farmer living in Frankford Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had black hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Cumberland County September 15, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 23 as a private with Co. F, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company June 16, 1865.

He married Mary Ann Nailor in 1867 and fathered Amanda C. (b. @1868), Rebecca Jane "Jennie" (b. 06/28/69 - married George H. Shannon and a Mountz), Charles D. (b. 01/28/71*), Carrie A. (b. 11/19/72 - married Harry Adison Heagy), George W. (b. 09/12/74), Robert (b. 05/13/82), and Mary F. (b. 01/21/87 - married J. Harvey Miller).
