Born the eldest child of John and Catherine (Smith) Mather in Pennsylvania, Samuel's childhood was spent on the family homestead in Ohio. His first marriage within the Quaker Church was to Lydia Evans on Mar. 28, 1827. The couple and their large family pioneered in an area near Springdale, Cedar Co., Iowa. To this union, I've recorded the birth of 14? children; however the couple divorced May 4, 1869. The fact that both husband and wife were dismissed from the church may have contributed to the breakup. Sam was an avid abolitionist, having sheltered John Brown and his company on their farm, and joining in the Civil War as a wagoner in Company I, Iowa Voluntery 35th Infantry Regiment. In that same company were the brothers of Christena Lee. Joseph Lee died of disease and Milton in battle. Christena and Samuel were married July 29, 1869 and pioneered in Kansas after the birth of their son, Perry Mather. Their first Kansas winter, was spent encamped with covered wagon at the edge of a salt marsh, probably in Rice County. It appears that Samuel was responsible for the Lee family's move to Kansas and assisted his father-in-law Perry Lee in forming the Leesburg community.
