Lewis spent much of his life in the Alabama State Penitentiary in Montgomery County. When Lewis was 19 years old, he was arrested with another older man named Roy Medley for robbing Carlton Harrison of 90 cents and a gold watch valued at $35.00. Lewis plead guilty to avoid a trial and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Roy Medley 1st pleaded innocent and opted for a jury trial. The court got him to plead guilty in exchange for a 10 year sentence.
In @ 1951, Lewis got into a fight in prison with a man named Melbourne Kittrell. Lewis slashed Kittrell with a knife and he died several hours later. Lewis was charged with murder.
