Lydia and her twin brother, Gust, were born to Karl and Sophie (Wahl) Martel on a farm near Lehr, North Dakota. Sophie died 1915. Her father adopted Lydia and her brothers and sisters to neighboring families. Lydia was adopted by Jacob and Eva Eisenbeisz, with whom she lived through the summer of her 17th year. She married Jacob Schilling on September 4, 1927. Together they had three children and farmed on the Schilling farm nine miles north and two miles west of Bowdle, South Dakota until 1943. They moved into town and ran Schilling Dairy for 13 years beginning in 1948.
