Jake was born to Johann and Rosina (Keszler) Schilling on a farm not far from Wishek, North Dakota. His parents bought another farm in South Dakota in 1903, nine miles north and 2 miles west of Bowdle and moved the family there.

In 1927 Jake took over that family farm. September 4, 1927 he married Lydia Martel, who was his cook at the time, and his sweetheart for years before. Together they had three children and farmed until 1943 when they retired and moved to Bowdle. They ran Schilling Dairy for 13 years beginning in 1948. Jake was life-long avid builder and inventor with two patents to his name.

He lost his sweetheart in 1988.

Jake lived on his own and drove his pickup every day until he was 100 years old. He lived to be 106, dying on the same day his father did 70 years later.

Someone asked once what he died of. He died of being 106.
