Traer Star Clipper, Friday, April 5th, 1957 – page 1
Mrs. Lula M. Davis, 72, died unexpectedly of an embolism at 10 o'clock Sunday in St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids, where she had been taken about five hours earlier from the home of her son in law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Fink, in Marion. She had been recuperating in the Fink home from surgery for removal of her gall bladder. The operation was performed March 16, and Mrs. Davis had been able to leave the hospital on March 26. Mrs. Fink wrote the Star-Clipper last week end that her mother was apparently making a steady recovery.
Her body was returned to Traer, and services were held in the States Funeral Home at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Paul Somerville, pastor of the Methodist church, of which Mrs. Davis was a member. Mrs. Rodney Wood sang, accompanied by Ruth Thomas. Mrs. Leah Southard and Mrs. Verle Hite were in charge of the flowers. Pall bearers were Lawrence Childs, John Altenhein, Otto Moeller, Dick Southard, William Hite and Paul Fleming. Interment was in West Union cemetery.
Lula Finch was born in Hume, Illinois, October 4, 1884. She came to Boone with her parents when she was about a year old. She married Albert T. Davis February 13, 1901 at Boone and he served there as blacksmith for several years. They came to Traer about 44 years ago and he was employed by L. H. McComas and later by H. M. Trimble for a short time. Mr. Davis died in 1944.
Mrs. Davis worked for a time in Simon's Style Shop and was a practical nurse many years. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors and the Rebekah lodges, of Traer. During the last tow or three years she divided her time among her children. In 1954. she went to California to visit a daughter, Mrs. Harold Robbins at National City and while there suffered a heart attack. She returned to Iowa in May 1956, and lived with a son, Burnel Davis, at Ankeny for about four months. Then after spending four months with a daughter, Mrs. Paul Kennedy, in Iowa City, Mrs. Davis went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Fink, at Marion. But she was always eager to come home for a visit with Traer friends, of which there were many. She was a patriotic Traerite.
Mrs. Davis is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Leslie (Dorothy) Fink, Marion; Mrs. Harold (Audrey) Robbins, National City, California; Mrs. Paul (Georgia) Kenneth, Iowa City; and a son, Burnel Davis, Ankeny. She also leaves 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Bonnie, preceded her in death.
