Pioneer Bohemian Settler in Elkhorn Township is Dead
Anton Spirek, one of the most prominent of pioneer Bohemian settlers in Elkhorn township, died Monday afternoon at five at his home after a month's illness with heart trouble and pneumonia. For the past two weeks he has been confined to his bed and in precarious condition. The funeral will be held at the residence Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock, Rev. F. E. Drake of the Episcopal church officiating.
Anton Spirek was born in Austria, July 5, 1856, and would have been fifty-six years old in July. He came to America with his parents when he was five years old, the family moving to Washington County, Ia. After a few years' residence there they moved to Elkhorn township, Webster County. January 5, 1881, Mr. Spirek married Miss Anna Wesley of Elkhorn township. She is still living.
They had seven children all of whom were living and were at his bedside when death came. They are Mrs. John Waseka, Will Spirek, Adam, Elizabeth, Rose, David and Grace. Albert Spirek of Colorado, a brother, Mrs. Mary Roots of North Dakota, a sister, Charles Spirek, Frank and Ed, Mrs. Joe Koll, brothers and sisters, are living and it is thought will all be in attendance at the funeral.
A Prominent Character.
Anton Spirek has been a highly successful farmer in this par t of the country for all the years of his manhood: He has been chief among his fellow countrymen, who located in this vicinity and had also been well and favorably known among other residents. He became a Mason when a young man and had been initiated into the ranks of Shriners. It is not known whether the Masonic lodge will have part in the funeral and burial services.
