The civil war broke out when William was 16, and he joined on Aug 15, 1862, as soon as he was able to, at the age of 18. He served 3 years with Company F, 96th Illinois Infantry, and he was present at the battles of Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain, where he was severly wounded in the chin and left shoulder and disabled for several months. After returning to the field, he nearly died of sunstroke and was disabled another month. .
He married Rachael Vanderlinder Oct 9, 1866, and they had a son and 6 daughters: Ida Bertha, Francis (Frank) A, Katheryn (Katie) Lillian, Rose Willia (Willie), Iona J (Jennie), Bessie E and Laura Elsie.
After the war William farmed for awhile, but his war injuries made it difficult for him, so he persued occupations in agriculture and real estate, and then, having studied law, he passed the bar, and became an attorney with his practice in Morseville.
