After his military service, B.L. attended Texas Tech University and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy. He then attended Michigan State University and received his Master's Degree in Soil Science in 1951. After his official retirement, he served until his death as Professor Emeritus. Dr. Allen truly loved his field of expertise and was a dedicated educator. He mentored many students in the Master's and Doctoral degrees and is fondly remembered by them. He took great pride in teaching and spoke fondly of his former students and his faculty colleagues. He was a demanding instructor, and received several teaching awards during his career at Texas Tech. He coached the Texas Tech Soils Judging Team for 40 years, winning five national titles. Presenting research nationally and worldwide, Dr. Allen was recognized as an international expert in soil science, especially related to arid and semi-arid lands. B.L. was a longtime member of St. Paul's on the Plains Episcopal Church and enjoyed many friendships there. He served on various committees at his church as well as for the Optimist Club and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lubbock. He was also a devoted fan of Texas Tech Athletics, faithfully attending football, basketball, and baseball games. He especially enjoyed travel, opera, and foreign cultures.

Allen; and a number of close friends including, Dr. Tracy Gage and Don Shores. He is survived and fondly remembered by several nieces, nephews, and their children. Uncle Bonnie was always encouraging and supportive of all of us, and was especially interested in seeing family members further their education.
