William married second Mary Hardie (1815-1890) after Ellen passed away. The had no children.

William was for many years one of Carlisle's leading business men. He was a farmer and in 20 years grew his estate significantly to well over $100,000 by the 1870s, quite a lot of money if converted to today's dollars. Even his wife was listed as having money to her name, which was rather unusual for married women at the time. In his later years he was listed on the census as a "grocer," indicating that he was involved in business of selling the commodities produced on his farm.
