Monday evening - November 16, 1896
We believe it will cause a real sorrow in the hearts of many people to learn of this man's death. It was known, of course, that he was very sick and the end was near, yet we hardly realized the full import of the fact. Personally, we liked the man. He was a little rough in his manner, rather lacking in the conventionalities of life, but his honesty, justice and sincerity were very marked. He was one of the truest friends one ever had. Loyalty was in every part of the man. Once a friend, always a friend, unless the friend was found unworthy.
Mr. Eldred came from the state of Vermont. In 1849, he took passage and started for California, arriving in San Francisco after a voyage of 172 days. He lived in that city, Oakland and other parts of the north many years and then came to Los Angeles, living there and at Santa Monica and Santa Ann. He came to Santa Barbara about a dozen years ago after selling his ranch in the Santa Ann.
He had quite a nice property at that time. Since coming here he has not been engaged in any business. He purchased the home in which he died and there lived a quiet life. His funeral will take place from his late residence tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. He was 72 years of age.
