Gerson Barter, 93, the joyful, kind and optimistic patriarch of his family, passed away March 26, 2012, in Denver. Rabbis Steven Rubenstein and Selwyn Franklin and Cantor Martin Goldstein officiated at the March 27 graveside service at Mt. Nebo Cemetery. Feldman Mortuary made the arrangements.

His family remembers him as someone "who was always supportive, never judgmental." Described by one rabbi as a Denver institution, he will be deeply missed by all his family and many friends.

Mr. Barter was born Nov. 19, 1918, in Denver, to Sam and Mary Barter. The only son of six children, he upheld the tradition of the Kohanim throughout his life and was a fixture at morning and evening minyans.

A graduate of Denver's North High School, he served in the US Army as dental technician in WW II.

He married Maxine Hoffman on January 23, 1945, and they were together until her death in September of 1971.

Mr. Barter married Ruby Sunshine in 1976. She predeceased him in 2005.

After WW II, Mr. Barter and his father established Barter Machinery and Supply Co., which he operated until his retirement in 1993.

Under their leadership, Barter Machinery was known not only for its business success but also as a place where people in need in the community found assistance.

Following his retirement, Mr. Barter enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was an avid Denver sports fan and would share every game with his sister over the phone.

Mr. Barter is survived by his sons Dr. Bruce (Linda) Barter, Dr. Mark (Susie) Barter and Dr. Jeff (Sandy) Barter; grandchildren Miriam (Dean) Noble, Steven Barter, Dr. Garrett (Elke) Barter, Devra Barter, Dr. Emily Barter and Zachary Barter; great-grandsons Cooper Noble and Izzy Barter; sisters Anne (Sig) Levisohn and Naomi Phillips and brother-in-law Dr. Murray (Eleanor) Hoffman; stepchildren Shari Sunshine; Peggy Sunshine, Randi (Andy Hopkins) Sunshine, JoAnne Sunshine and Ron (Feather) Sunshine; step grandchildren Wendy (Dave) BaMonti, Rick (Laura) Carden, Aaron Steinberg, Jessica (David) Freier, Nathan Simon, Jacqueline Trombley, Maya and Luisa Sunshine; and step great-grandchildren Emily BaMonti, Asher Carden, Raven Steinberg, Joshua and Benjamin Freier, and Ginger Epstein.

He was predeceased by grandchildren David Barter, Michael Barter and Mickey Barter.

Contributions may be made to Shalom Hospice or BMH-BJ.
