"Jacob Shaffer Kiester (called Shaffer) was born Aug. 10, 1835 and died Nov. 23, 1864, at Florence, SC, while a prisoner of war. Shaffer was captured by the Confederates during the Peninsula Campaign. He had been incarcerated in the infamous prison at Andersonville and was transferred to Florence where he died. There is among his letters one from his Florence Prison written a short time before his death."
