On April 12, 1868 Alexander was married to Rose Merino at Burlington, Vermont. The occupation listed on that record looks like saloon keeper but it might be salon keeper since he was a barber. It was the first marriage for both parties. Rose's maiden name was recorded as Austin on her tombstone and in Gardner's records for her children. On her son Andrew's marriage record her maiden name was Ground.
In the 1870 census the Bessetts were residing in Burlington, Vermont. The name was spelled Bissette on the census form. Alexander, spelled Alick, was a barber. The couples' only child, Alick, was one year old. Ten years later the family had at some point moved here to Gardner. Mr. Bessett was still clipping hairs.

Including the list above and the attached children with family links this means two more children of hers are unaccounted for. In the census she was residing at 49 Green Street in Gardner. It was an apartment directly across from the Old Burial Ground which lies behind the Congregational Church. A boarder named William Soule, aged 70, was staying with her. He was a carpenter and married but no spouse was listed with him. He is buried in this cemetery with the Bessett family.
