Death Claims Hartford Resident
John Rexilius, Who Has Lived Here for Twenty Years Taken By Pneumonia
John Fredrick Rexilius, for twenty years a resident of Hartford, passed away at his home in this city Saturday at three-thirty a. m. After an illness of eleven days with pneumonia.
He was born in Karwetz, Germany, September 16, 1858; thus at the date of his death he had attained the age of 67 years 2 months 12 days. In 1893 accompanied by his mother and two sisters he followed a brother who two years previously had come to this country to seek the opportunities offered here. He first resided in the town of Hartford for six months. Then removing to Slinger, he lived there until 1898 when he took up his residence in the town of Hartford on the outskirts of this city. Finally twenty years ago having by his industry and frugality laid aside a good sum of money he bought a little home on First street, which was to serve as the family residence until the death of the several members. During the time he lived here he worked for various concerns in town, including the Hartford Tannery under E. W. Leach and the Konrad and Werner Malt House. The little family that had come from Germany remained closely bound together during these years. One sister married, becoming Mrs. Henry Klumb of the town of Barton. Since the deceased and the other sister, Miss Augusta Rexilius remained single, they continued to live with their mother in the home on First Street. December 18, 1923 the aged mother was taken by death, and on April 1925 the sister passed away. Thus the brother, the last of the three, was left to remain for but a few months. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Henry Klumb of Barton. His steadfast worthwhile qualities won for him the respect of all who knew him.
His remains were laid to rest in the Union cemetery. Services were held by Rev. Von Rohr at the home at one-thirty and at the Peace Lutheran church at two.
