Mr. and Mrs. Chas. H. Miles of northwest of Leonard observed their 48th wedding anniversary last Wednesday. A dinner was served that day in their home in their honor with all their children and other relatives present. They were married May 8, 1898 by the Rev. Conrad Steffen at Steffenville.

Charles Hezekiah Miles was born the son of James Marshall and Mary Benjamin Miles on Dec. 22, 1872, in Camp Point, Ill. His father was born in 1819 in Lowell, Mass. and died in 1874 near Liberty, Ill. His mother then married William Thorp in 1876 in Ill. Charles Miles moved to Steffenville, Mo. in 1885 with his mother, stepfather, two brothers (Enoch and Cyrus Miles), two stepbrothers (Willie and Warren Thorp), and one step sister (Carrie Thorp). On May 8, 1898 he was married to Edna Ann Derringer, daughter of Ludwell and Adeline Ward Derringer of Philadelphia, Mo.

Charles and Edna lived in northeastern Shelby County until 1901 when they moved to a farm two miles west of Leonard. In 1903 they moved to a farm two miles east of Cherry Box where they lived for 35 years. They opened a general store in 1914 and served a large area. Charles died Nov. 9, 1949, and Edna died Nov. 13, 1977. Both are buried at the Mennonite-Brethren cemetery south of Cherry Box.

Their six children were: Elma May, born April 10, 1899, married William Beach; Nellie Pearl, born October 22 1901, married Edward Beach; Jewell Mabel, born march 18, 1904, married Bert McDowell, died January 11, 1978; Mary Irene, born April 14, 1906, married Joe B. Fifer, died March 31, 1985; Leroy Hezekiah, born January 12, 1912, married Grace Early; and Beulah Edna, born August 30, 1915, married Sidney Wear.
