Angelo LaPietra, 80, aka The Hook, was a former capo of the Chicago mob who ran the Chinatown/26th Street Crew and oversaw gambling in the Loop, Chinatown, Cicero and Berwyn. He died at Rush-Presbyterian Hospital. Survivors included wife Mildred; daughter Joann Lascola and son Angelo Jr.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
LaPietra was reportedly a top assassin for the mob and credited with ordering the killing of reputed mob bosses Anthony and Michael Spilotro. LaPietra and three other organized crime figures tortured and murdered high-ranking crime boss William Petrocelli in 1981 according to a government informant. Petrocelli's murder was ordered by crime boss Joseph Ferriola because Petrocelli withheld $100,000 in mob profits earmarked for Ferriola's nephew Harry Aleman.
LaPietra was sentenced to sixteen years in Leavenworth Federal Prison after being convicted in 1986 of skimming $2 million in unreported gambling profits from casinos in Las Vegas. His conviction was considered the biggest blow to the Chicago mob since the 1940s.
After his release, LaPietra returned to Chicago and in 1981 founded the Old Neighborhood Italian-American Club at 30th and Shields.
