Gary grew up on the family farm near Norwich and graduated from Norwich High School. He then attended college at Wichita University.
On May 7, 1961, Gary was united in marriage with Deanna Sue Wills in Norwich. This union was blessed with one son, Monte.
Gary had a passion for the farm and his cattle operation, VD Cattle Company. Gary and Deanna owned D&G Hardware for 25 years. Deanna ran the hardware store while Gary ran the farm, worked at Farrar's in Norwich and later at Greenline in Harper for nearly 40 years.
Gary was a member of Norwich Fire Department and served as Fire Chief for many years.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Deanna on September 30, 2009; his parents; and one granddaughter, Whitney. Gary is survived by his son, Monte Vavra and wife, Arla, of Norwich; six grandchildren: Gavin, Josh, Beth, Olivia, Madilyn and Liam Vavra; brother, Don Vavra and wife, Pat, of Florence Colorado; sisters, BarBara Wright and husband, Joe, of Anthony and Beverly Collier and husband, Frank, of Norwich; sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy and John Peyton of Mulvane, Beth and Louis Page of Cayuga, TX and Alice and Jerry Alloway of Conway Springs; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
