Birth: 3rd of ten known children in Canada, most likely at Waterloo county, Ontario, Canada.

Census: 1870, age 6 Negaunee, Marquette county, Michigan with parents & four Canadian born siblings, at Fourth near Bluff, father an editor of Marquette Weekly Plain Dealer.

~ father removed family to what became Le Mars, Plymouth county, Iowa, pioneering its first newspaper Le Mars Sentinel 3 FEB 1871, owning the two story building in which it operated on second floor, where the Mickley hotel later stood, among charter members in 1873 of Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Census: 1880, age 16 Le Mars, Plymouth county, Iowa , "The Ice Cream Capital of the World", with parents & six siblings, father an editor.

~ father sold his Le Mars Sentinel newspaper then legally, under John Wilford Buchanan's name started the Despatch which was not a success so after some thirteen years and birth of five more children removed family to Springfield, Sangamon county, Illinois, around 1884, where its said he bought a third interest in the Illinois State Republican but was "squeezed out" later, so removed to Pittsburg, Crawford county, Kansas around 1889.

~ City Directory, 1890, Pittsburg, Kansas: "The Pittsburg Kansan – By J. C. Buchanan, editor and proprietor; issued weekly; Democratic in politics. Office 116 E. Third Street."

~ 14 FEB 1893 his younger sister Petema was married to a Rombauer.

Census(Kansas): 1895, age 27 Pittsburg, Crawford county, Kansas with wife & son in parents home & six siblings.

~ its reported sister Ella taught in Texas, such documentation escapes my viewing, but her older brother, John Wilford was once president of a newspaper in Fort Worth, however, she is found as a school teacher, along with younger sister Luvena, in Pittsburg, Kansas prior to becoming first director of the towns library in 1901.

Death: in Pittsburg, Crawford county, Kansas, day following mother's unrelated death. Double funeral held Saturday.

John W. Buchanan of Pittsburg Dies After a Long Illness.

Pittsburg, Kan., Jan. 19. --John W. Buchanan, son of J.C. Buchanan, editor of the Pittsburg Kansan, died this morning at 8 o'clock. His is the second bereavement to the Buchanan family, his mother dying yesterday of pneumonia. The funeral of Mrs. Buchanan, which was to have taken place today, was therefore postponed until 2 o'clock Saturday, when the double funeral will take place.

John W. Buchanan had been a helpless invalid for four years, suffering from a peculiar form of rheumatism, which rendered the use of his limbs and muscles impossible, the power of speech and the movement of his eyes alone being left him.

Mr. Buchanan was well known several years ago through Texas as a newspaper writer of considerable ability, being at one time president of the Fort Worth Mail Publishing company, and during his residence in Texas was connected with three very influential papers. He was 34 years old. Mrs. Buchanan, who died yesterday, was 54 years old.

Mother: Catherine Bergey b: 13 AUG 1845 in Pennsylvania
