MRS. MARY NINA PINYAN COOK Mrs. Mary Nina Pinyan Cook, age 91, of Acworth, Ga. died March 23, 2006. Funeral services will be held Monday March 27, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home, Kennesaw, Ga. with Rev. Jack Roebuck and Rev. Robert Ledbetter officiating. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. from the Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, Ga. Mary Pinyan Cook was born April 13, 1914 in Crabapple, Ga. in what is now North Fulton Co. She moved to East Point in 1918 and lived there almost 80 years until she moved to her daughter's home in Acworth in 1997. She lived at Wellington Place Assisted Living in Kennesaw from 2001 until the end of 2005. Mrs. Cook attended Russell High School in East Point. She had a successful catering business for many years, doing cocktail parties and weddings in the Atlanta area. In 1961 she became a School Food Services Manager for the Atlanta Board of Education and was manager of the school food program at Therrell High School for most of her career. She was active in the Fifth District School Food Service Association and served as President of the Association for one year. Mrs. Cook was proud of her work in the association on behalf of the needy school children of Georgia. At that time many children received free lunches but they had nothing else to eat until their next lunch at school. The School Food Service Manager relentlessly lobbied the state legislature on behalf of a free breakfast program. This lobbying emphasized the importance of good nutrition to the learning experience since hungry children cannot concentrate on their studies. To get the legislators' attention the ladies cooked fried chicken and took it to the capital on several occasions. The free breakfast program was initiated and thousands of hungry Georgia school children were able to start their day with a good meal. Mrs. Cook holds an Honorary Life Membership in the Fifth District School Food Service Association. Mary Cook is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Suzanne Martin of Newnan; daughter, Carole Sue Tankersley of Haralson; daughter, Linda Knight of Acworth; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Dick Mohler of Buckhead; eight grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Iona Texas Cook. Mrs. Cook was a successful career woman ahead of her time but her family always came first. She cherished her family and was especially proud of her grandchildren and her great grandchildren.
