Samuel Burnham was born in Rindge, NH on February 21, 1833, the son of Rev. Amos W. Burnham D.D. and Tirzah (Kimball) Burnham. Samuel attended the public schools of Rindge and subsequently pursued preparatory studies, first under his father and then at the academies in Francestown and New Ipswich, NH. He entered Williams College in 1851, sickness kept him from part of his junior year and all of his senior year. Despite his absence the college granted his diploma as a graduate of that institution. Following college Samuel spent a winter in the south in search of health and returned home somewhat improved, though still afflicted by poor health. He taught school for a short period then in 1857, he moved to Boston and at this time began his career as a writer. One of his first efforts was the preparation of the "History of East Boston" he wrote the sketches of Gov. Andrew and Charles Sumner for Headley's "Massachusetts in the War" He supervised the publication of the speeches of Charles Sumner, and at the time of his death was working on a "History of the Old South Church. His chief employment though was as a frequent writer for the general press, contributing to many papers and magazines of the day, including The Boston Journal, the Boston Advertiser, the Springfield Republican, the Christian Union, the Congregationalist, and became the editor and opinion writer of the Congregational Quarterly. Aside from his writing he was a frequent public speaker for college commencements, before historical societies and other organizations. Despite the poor health that plagued his life, he married on February 22, 1865, Martha (Norcross) Clark. The next few years of his life were his best until 1873 when sickness returned from which he died, aged forty years, on June 22, 1873.
