Son of William Gordon Bedford and Sarah Elizabeth Shaw, Lee Archie was born in Sedalia, Pettis County, Missouri shortly after the close of the Civil War. Lee's parents had quickly left the Texas area to escape marauding Indians. The 1870 Madison County, Arkansas census shows the Bedfords residing there but by the 1880's tax records showed most of the Bedfords had moved back to Parker County, Texas. Lee opened a hardware store in Winters, Texas about 1900. He first married Maggie Lee Carlton on September 2, 1888. Together they had eight children. Maggie died on February 23, 1906 of typhoid fever. Lee soon courted then married Ethel Edvina Thomasson on April 15, 1908. Together they also produced eight children. Once again, however, tragedy struck and Ethel died of an acute appendicitis on September 3, 1923. Lee died October 6, 1953 and is buried in Winters between his two wives.
