The following is an account of the death of Wallace Proudfit by his half brother Andrew P. Proudfit:

"In the enlistment for war in 1861, David Wallace Proudfit, then 19 years old, was a volunteer in Co. G. 40th Ill. Infantry, was killed in the battle of Shiloh, April 6, 1862, as was also many of his company. Wallace [was] left on the field, shot through one arm, one shoulder and through the bowels, in the afternoon of that day was yet able to crawl some little distance to a little stream, fill his canteen and crawl back with water for Capt. Bright Shirley who was shot through the knee. He (Wallace) then drew off one boot, placed it under his head for a pillow, straightened out his six foot of length placing his bootless foot over the other and there died before sundown. When Captain Shirley was carried off the field, Wallace was yet alive, but when men returned for him he was dead. Capt. Shirley, while recruiting, visited at our home to relate the details of the above sad story."
