He was a farmer, barber, and a dry cleaner owner and operator and a lifelong resident of Ness County. He choose to stay home and work on the family farm for two years before going to high school. On February 4, 1942 he was inducted in to the United States Army where he served for 3 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Olin Cole Post 152, and the Ness County Historical Society. He was a former City Council member and an appointed interim mayor of Ness City.
On December 28, 1942 he married Henrietta Leiker in Ness City. To this union four children were born. She preceded him in death on March 26, 1968. On July 2, 1971 he married Sue Bamberger Cranston in Ness City. She survives.
Other survivors include one son: Stanley Haas (Nancy), Wichita, Kansas; two daughters, Shelle Anna Harkness, Boulder, CO and Elaine James (Richard), McPherson; two step-sons, Steve Cranston ( Susan), Ness City and Roger Cranston (Shane`e), Manhattan, Kansas; two step-daughters, D.J. Erkie (Norm), Cimarron, Kansas and Barb Kyle (Kurt), Ness City; one sister, Rosa Moore; 19 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife Henrietta Haas; son, Donald Haas; grandson, Ryland Schartz; four brothers and 8 sisters.
Rosary and Funeral Mass are pending and will be announced at a later date. Burial in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 9 am until 3 pm at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City Memorial contributions may be given to the Leisure Years Senior Center.
