"Peggy Joyce's Mother Dies'; Illness Brief
Former Broadway Actress Expected to Arrive This Morning
Mrs. Dora Selena Upton Hudson, mother of Peggy Hopkins Joyce, former Broadway actress, died yesterday afternoon at 1:10 o'clock at a local hospital, after an illness of two days.
Miss Joyce is expected to arrive in Norfolk this morning at 10 o'clock from New York.
Mrs. Hudson resided at 319 [sic] Lee street, Berkley. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Laderna Norman Wood, and the widow of Arthur H. Hudson. Miss Joyce was her only surviving child, and was born of her previous marriage to Samuel Upton. She was christened Marguerite Upton, and was born in Berkley.
The Uptons moved to Camden County, N. C., about 1900, when Peggy was a small child, and Samuel Upton ran a store and barber shop near Camden Court House for about three years. Then Mr. and Mrs. Upton separated, and Mrs. Upton and her daughter returned to Berkley, where Mrs. Upton remarried and Peggy spent much of her childhood.
The body of Mrs. Hudson was removed to the Graham Funeral Home, Jackson and Jefferson streets, South Norfolk, pending funeral arrangements."`
