VERNON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY OBITUARY ARTICLE: Mrs. James P. Allen
Almeda Appleman, daughter of Valentine and Emmaline Appleman, was born in the town of Clinton, February 7th, 1861, and passed away at the St. Francis hospital in La Crosse, April 17th, 1944, at the advanced age of 83 years, 2 months and 10 days.
She was united in marriage to James Allen of Webster, June 13, 1890. Soon after they moved onto the farm now owned by their son, Raymond, where they spent the years of their married life, until the death of her husband, in 1923. Since that time, with the exception of a few months, she made her home in La Crosse.
Two sons were born to this worthy couple, Amol Downing of Jug Creek, and Raymond Earle of Salem Ridge, she also leaves a sister, Mrs. Ida Mason, of La Mar, Missouri, and one grandshon, Richard, and many other relatives and a host of friends, are left to mourn her passing.
Thus another one of our sturdy pioneers, one who has held a place of high esteem in our hearts and whose passing has made a vacancy that will be hard to fill, has been called to join that "innumerable caravan: of loved ones, who are going down the "Valley One by One". Thus the curtain is drawn on a life well spent....
Funeral services were held at the Salem Ridge church, Friday afternoon, April 21, at 2 o'clock. Rev. L. H. Holmes spoke on the test: "I have finished my course, henceforth.": Mrs. Ruth Johannessen sang, accompanied by Mrs. Esther Andrew.
Interment was made in the Salem cemetery.
