Thomas Loney left Canada when in his early 20's and travelled west to California, the land of sunshine, gold, and good land. His family had left Ireland when he was just a boy and had settled in Ontario Canada where Thomas attended school and grew up. Not long after Thomas Loney travelled West, a young woman named Lois Amelia Sanford of Nova Scotia, Canada took a leap of faith and travelled west to California as well. These two young people from Canada would cross paths, become enamored with one another, and marry on September 28, 1859 in the town of Smartsville, California. Thomas engaged in freighting an ox team from Marysville to Grass Valley. Later he worked in mining. "He was an amalgamator at North Star Mine for over 30 years." Sadly, his wife Lois died in 1861 at the tender age of 28. After having been a widower for just over ten years, Thomas married Sarah MacDougall on May 19, 1872 at Grass Valley not long after his 40th birthday. In 1877, Thomas purchased a ranch in Grass Valley, initially comprising about 300 acres which in ensuing years grew to over 1,000 acres. It was there where he and Sarah raised their eight children: John, Lois, William, Linda, Eunice, Christopher, and David Merton, and Chester. Thomas Loney was the son of William Loney and Mary Fee of Ireland.
