Robert Bailey "Bob" Gist, 68, was dead on arrival at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center at 12:26 PM Sunday, Sept. 10, 1989; he had been in ill health since May. On Oct. 11, 1920, he was born in Coleman, TX. He had lived in Lafayette since 1943, coming here from California. His marriage was Jan. 26, 1943, in Lafayette, to Velma A. (May) Keller, who is a former employee of L.S. Ayres and Co.

Mr. Gist was assistant superintendent of the northern division of Indiana Gas. He had been with the company for more than 40 years when he retired in 1986. He was a World War II Navy veteran and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1154, American Legion Post 11, and Masonic Lodge 492. He also was a Golden Eagle and member of Eagles Lodge 347. An amateur radio operator, his call letters were KA9CXU.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Robert C. Keller of Shelbyville; a daughter, Sandra L. Bonazzo of Lafayette; two sisters, Mattie Bell Mallow of Brownwood, TX, and Louise (Mrs. Vernon) Moore of Dallas, TX; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Service Sept. 13, Hippensteel Chapel, the Rev. John E. Siner officiating; internment Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
