Lory was the fifth son of James and Minnie Clift. He also had four sisters. Growing up, Lora had to overcome his parents' poor spelling of his name. His friends called him Lory, while his teachers called him Lora. As for his middle name, J (only), his parents could not decide which uncle to name him after, James or John. Because they could not choose, they just left his middle name J.
Lory's father was a soldier in World War I. After the war, his father returned home very ill. The children had to tend to the farm, making an education very difficult to obtain. The family's income depended entirely on selling eggs, cream, corn, milk, and peanuts raised on the farm. Brown beans and cornbread was served at every meal, and occasionally they had chicken or beef. Life was hard growing up on the farm. There was no electricity, running water, and they did not have a refrigerator. The family did have a radio that they hooked up to the car's battery every once in a great while.
Lory attended High View School. During the seventh grade, he had to drop out of school to help at home. Dropping out of school was something he always regretted.
On August 30th, 1947, he married the love of his life, Charleene Brandon, at Wichita Falls, Texas. His first job was with a Phillips 66 service station. Lory took the advice of his boss to find a better paying job, so he started working in the oil field where he worked in one capacity or the other until his retirement in 1998. He was the field supervisor for Jolen Operating Company in charge of all their wells in Oklahoma and Kansas. Not bad for a man with a sixth grade education. His favorite oilfield memory was when he found out he would be in charge of movie star Doris Day's oil wells. She actually signed some of his paychecks.
In January, 1951, Lory and Charleene adopted a baby girl. In March 1964, they adopted a baby boy.
Lory is survived by his two children and their spouses, four grandchildren, three sisters and one brother.
