"William H Curtis died at Scotland, Bon Homme Co., Dakota, December 17 1882.
He was the oldest son of Judge James C Curtis and was born at Cochecton in this county, on the 19th of April 1826.
Aside from our common schools he spent one year in Lafayette College, Easton, Pa.
His first entrance into business was with his father in the lumbering business at Callicoon Depot about the time of the completion of the Erie Road.
In 1850 - 51- 52 and 57-58 he was Supervisor of the Town of Cochecton, and in 1858 was elected Sheriff of this county.
For several years he was Justice of the Peace, and Post Master of Callicoon Depot from 1859 - 1861.
During the year 1862 to 1877 he was Assistant Revenue Assessor.
In 1881 He was elected Probate Judge of Bon Homme Co., Dakota, and was very popular in his adopted home.
He was married twice - in 1851 to Elizabeth Burnham, she dying in 1855, and next to Mary Bush, daughter of P H Bush of Fallsburgh, NY.
By the first wife he had one child who died young, and by the second he had seven which survive him.
He was popular at home and aboard because he was kind and obliging to all and was always engaged in some work which was for the good of the community in which he lived.
Being a member of the Order of Masons, he was buried by the Fraternity on Sunday at Cochecton, NY and his monument is in the hearts of his fellow citizens.
He has gone to meet the Grand Master of the Universe."
