"James I Curtis PASSES AWAY FORMER COUNTY DIST ATTORNEY; Prosecuted the Famous Case Against Jacob Gerhardt for Murder of Sister-In-Law - James I Curtis of Callicoon, a well known lawyer and a member of the Curtis family which has been represented in the Delaware Valley for nearly a century, died at his late home at 7 a.m. Wednesday, of old age, being in his 80th year.
The funeral was held on Friday at 1 o'clock at the house and at 2 o'clock at the Episcopal Church, Rev Uriah Symonds conducted the services.
Interment in the Callicoon Cemetery in charge of Undertake E A Brand of Jeffersonville.
The funeral was an exceptionally large one the Masons attending in a body and friends from all parts of the county attending to pay their respects to the man who has been a prominent figure in public live in this county for so many years.
He leaves surviving, his widow; his son, James H., the present supervisor of Delaware; two daughters - Jane Eldridge wife of Charles F Bergner; and Olive, wife of Frank Austin, a traveling agent of the Erie railroad, in the freight department; a brother, Charles T Curtis of Callicoon and a sister, Mrs Yale Rice of Falls Church, Virginia.
A short history of Mr Curtis' life - James I Curtis was the fifth child born to James C and Pamelia Curtis. His birth was on the 2nd day of July 1832 in Cochecton, NY inthe old Major Taylor mansion which was burned in 1835.
He is a lineal descendent on his father's side of Joseph Greswold who in the year 1750 purchased lots 59 and 61 in one of the Great Lots of the Hardenburgh Patient located on both sides of the Callicoon and comprising a large part of the present town of Delaware, and on his mother's side of Oliver Calkin, on of the few survivors of the bloody battle of Minisink, fought July 22 1779 by the Militia and Volunteers of Orange County against Joseph Brant and his Mohawk warriors and Tory allies.
James I Curtis attended school in the old school house located near the Presbyterian church on the Cochecton Flats. He was also a student for one year in the Academy at Montgomery, and also at the Damascus Union Academy during the first year of its operations, 1850 - 51. His time when not engaged in school duties was occupied with work on his father's farm in in his store.
In 1853 he removed to Callicoon to become an assistant to his brother, William H., who had commenced the sale of merchandise a few months after the opening of the Erie to Binghamton in 1849.
The most important probably was the case of the State against Jacob Gerhardt for the murder of his sister-in-law in the lower part of the Town of Cochecton. Arthur C Butts was the attorney for Gerhardt and made a very able defense but the jury returned a verdict of murder in the 2nd degree."
