Santa Cruz Morning Sentinel, Tuesday 3/29/1904 p3:3, PHIL ALCORN DROWNED AT BEN LOMAND At 3pm Monday afternoon Phil Alcorn aged 16 years, son of Mrs. Joe Alcorn was drowned near the county bridge at Ben Lomand in the San Lorenzo river which was conderably swollen on account of recent rain. This boy & Alvin Stirling were in a canoe when it struck a fallen tree causing the canoe to upset. They grabed ahold of a tree. Stirling managed to reach shore but Alcorn became so weak that he had to let go & was swept down the river by the swift current & was never seen alive again. Men patrolled the banks of the river in an effort to recover the body but without success. Word was telephoned to the Sentinel to notify people here to keep a lookout for the body as it was thought it might be carried down the river to the bay. Those who are posted as to the rivers currents do not think the body would be carried to the bay, saying it will be found not far away from the scene of the drowing. Deceased was an unusally bright boy & was well liked by the people of Ben Lomand.
SANT CRUZ SURF 4/9/1904 p5:1 Found at 5:00pm last evening 500 ft down river from where he drowned 12 days ago. He was found standing up with foot caught in tree root
