Mary Potts was born Kirsten Maria Johannesdatter in Holla Parish, Telemark, Norway, the daughter of Johannes Pedersen Eidshaug and his wife, Andrea Gundersdatter Saugbruget, who emigrated in 1853 and settled first in or near Delacourt, WI, and later near Maiden Rock, WI. Her parents Americanized their names to John and Andrea Peterson, and Kristen became Mary C. Peterson. On March 21, 1880, in Maiden Rock, she married James Marcus Potts (as the third of his ultimate four wives), and they homesteaded in Spink County, S. D., where their children Emma and Fred were born. Emma presumably died young, as she is not mentioned among the survivors in Mary's obituary. According to her obituary (published in the Cedar County Republican, May 13, 1892), she and her small family had moved to Cedar County, Missouri, in March of 1891. (Thanks to Mary's great-granddaughter Kristine Reid for sharing the obituary and the photo of Mary.)

Inscription

"Mary, wife of J. M. Potts, born June 22, 1852 died May 5, 1892."

She, so good,
Now has gone above,
Her span of life well trod,
Joyfully she'll meet her God.
---O, my love,
My mother, O my Mother.
