Albert was the son of Michael and Charlotte (Hendricks) Barnes.

Albert was one of the leading citizens of his day, and besides carrying on his farm, was extensively engaged in lumbering and in the sale of musical instruments and patent rights. He took an active part in local politics, and held many of the minor offices of the township.

Albert is a direct descendant of Thomas Barnes, one of the original founders of Hartford, Connecticut.
