Melville served his country during the Civil War from Dec 1861 until Jul 1865.
He enlisted as a Private on 13 Dec 1861 in Company H, Pennsylvania 2nd Heavy Artillery Regiment. He was mustered out of this unit as a Corporal on 3 Jan 1862. He was mustered into Company C, 67th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was promoted to Full Sergeant on 16 May 1865. He mustered out of the 67th Regiment on 14 Jul 1865 in Washington, DC.
The Pennsylvania 67th saw extensive duty including the battles of Winchester, Brandy Station, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Monocacy, Petersburg and the surrender at Appomattox Court House.
