John Washington Rivers was born in Washington County, Kentucky, February 25, 1820 and came to Jackson County, Indiana with his parents, James and Margaret Rivers in 1825. He lived there two years, then moved to Johnson County, Indiana, where he spent the remainder of his life.

He was married to Miss Lany Gilmer in 1844. Five sons were born to them, two having died when small. He was married a second time to Mrs. Emily J. Kephart, April 11, 1881.


He suffered a paralytic stroke, December 1891, which with heart trouble and old age caused his death, March 31, 1898. He was 78 years of age.


He leaves a wife, three sons, Henry, William T., and Robert L., eleven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one brother, and a host of friends to mourn their loss. He was a good husband, a kind father, an accommodating neighbor, always jovial and good natured. He was never heard to murmur during his long suffering.


Funeral services were held at the residence. Burial was at Hopewell Cemetery. Gone, but not forgotten.
