Robert Young, 78, of Saxony Drive, Upper St. Clair Township, died Monday, May 3, 1993, in St. Clair Memorial Hospital, Mount Lebanon.
He was born Oct. 6, 1914 in California, a son of the late George F. and Margaret Boyle Young.
A member of St. Louise de Marillac Church in Upper St. Clair, he was a former member of Transfiguration Church of Monongahela.
Mr. Young was a 1932 graduate of Monongahela High School where he earned nine athletic letters in basketball, track and football.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of first lieutenant and serving as chief medical adjutant for the Fifth Service Command. He was a member of Frank Downer American Legion Post 302 of Monongahela.
Mr. Young retired from PPG Industries in 1979 as an assistant to the president and was the director of equal opportunity employment from 1966 until his retirement. He was formerly employed in the personnel department at the former U.S. Steel Corp. at the Clairton and Edgar Thompson works, and the personnel departments of the Eljer Co. of Ford City and Sealtest Co. in Pittsburgh. He also served as personnel director for PPG Industries in Barberton, Ohio.
Mr. Young was chairman for the United Way fund drives in Barberton and was a member of the Pittsburgh Urban League.
In 1960, he served on the Professional Golf Association committee and served for many years on committees for the World Series of Golf at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
His wife, Bernadette Mooney Young, died in 1989.
Survivors include two sons, R. Scott Young of the Bellefield section of Pittsurgh and Glenn M. Young of Lawrenceville.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in daeth by a sister, Bertha Dunlevy; and three brothers, J. Glenn, William C. and George Young.
