William Loyd Kephart, 82, died Thurs., April 13, 2006, in Champaign, Ill.
He was born July 7, 1924, in Webster the son of William and Alice Kephart. He grew up and attended school in Sigourney. He left high school in 1943 and joined the Navy where he served as a radio operator in the Pacific aboard the destroyer USS Twining during World War II. He was present at the signing of the peace treaty with Japan. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to finish high school and enrolled in Iowa Wesleyan College. He graduated in 1950 with a BA in Sociology. He became a teacher and a coach, coaching the small school of West Chester boys to Iowa's Class C indoor and outdoor champions. He moved to Illinois in 1960 after receiving his MA in education from the University of Iowa. He retired in 1984 after spending seven years as Superintendent of Illinois Valley Central Schools in Chillicothe, Ill.
He is survived by his wife; a son, William; a daughter, Mary Sue; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Russell and Norman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Norval; five sisters, Lillian, Catherine, Rose, Jessie and Esther.
Celebration of Life services were held Tues., April 18 at Morgan Memorial Home in Savoy, Ill. with Dr. James Rhea officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to Faith United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Norval; five sisters, Lillian, Catherine, Rose, Jessie and Esther.
