Dixie was the sixth of 8 children born to Marvin and Maude LaGrone Gulley and was the descendent of two of the Panola County's earliest pioneer families (the Gulley and LaGrone Families). Born and raised in Midyett Community he was a 1943 graduate of Carthage High School before enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II. He served on the USS Sirius during the South Pacific Campaign and was stationed at Oakland Navel Hospital until released in 1946. He married Ruby Smauley on May 3, 1945 and was together 53 years until she preceded him in death on April 21, 1998.He attended Texas A&M College before moving his family to Port Arthur, Texas. He worked for the Gulf Oil Corporation for 32 years. Upon his retirement in 1979, he returned to Panola County to make his home there to enjoy the land, his family and his passion for hunting. He and Ruby had two children: Jackie W. Gulley (son) and Patricia Gulley Aaron. Grandchildren: Jerry Wayne Aaron; Kristie Morgan; Dixie Lynette Aaron; Stacey D. Aaron.
