Jordan was living with his father, George W. Carter, in Wayne County, Tennessee in 1850 and had moved with his father to Washington County, Arkansas by 1860.

He enlisted as a private in the C.S.A. and his stone indicates he served in Co. D, 17 Arkansas Infantry.

J.H. Carter married Sarah J. _____ by 1870 and the couple were living in Richland township, Washington County, Arkansas in the 1870 census. J.H. Carter was shown as a physician, b. ca. 1840 Tennessee and S.J. Carter was shown, b. ca. 1851 Illinois.

The 1880 census reveals the following children had been born to that couple: John W., b. ca. 1870, Susan E., b. ca. 1873, and Rebecca, b. ca. 1877.

On November 30, 1885, J.H. Carter, age 45, married Rebecca Irvin, age 43, in Washington County, Arkansas (marriage book H, page 350).

It doesn't appear that Jordan and Rebecca had any children from their marriage that survived to be enumerated in the census records. The 1900 census shows J.H. and Rebecca with the three children from J.H.'s first marriage living when them at Durham, Washington County, Arkansas. Jordan H. was shown as widowed in the 1910 census, with John W., Susie E., and Rebecca Arizona Carter residing in his household in Durham, Washington County, Arkansas.

Death date derived from Arkansas Death Index, 1914-1950.
