Mother: Rebecca Smith
m. 20 Dec 1820 Belmont Co., PA
Their Children:
Joshua, Rebecca, Mary Jane, Baruch, Hannah, Thomas, Joseph, Susanna, John Allen, James W., Samuel M.
Died in New Athens Township, Harrison Co, Ohio, 10 Mar 1857, Mrs Mary Jones Dickerson, wife of Joseph Dickerson and daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Jones, aged 55 years nearly.
Mother Dickerson was born in Fayette Co, PA, April 1802 and with her parents emigrated to Ohio near Burnsville in 1819. And in December 1820 she was united in marriage with Brother Dickerson. She was the subject of early religious training: her parents being religious and their home was for many years the home of Methodist itinerants. Here such men as Gruber, Shinn, Fleming, and others of the Baltimore circuit often found a resting place and went forth in their labor of love rejoicing. Surrounded with such influences, as might be expected she became a member of the M.E. Church at a very early age: of which she has been a faithful member for more than 40 years, and then left the church militant to join the church triumphant in Heaven.
Mother Dickerson had her cup of sorrow in this world - especially in the latter part of her life: but she continued to repose an unshaken confidence in her Savior. The writer of this article had frequent interviews with her during the past two years and found her always resigned to her lot, still believing that ‘all things work good to them that love God.’ In her last illness, which was somewhat protracted, though she had some dark seasons on account of peculiar trials; yet she could rejoice in God her Savior and as the hour of her dissolution approached, her faith grew stronger - her prospects brighter and she passed peacefully and tranquilly away to the spirit land, leaving a bright assurance behind that all was well.
The disease of which she died was dropsy. She leaves a large circle of friends to mourn her loss. A husband and 10 children have been sorely stricken by their sad bereavement. God bless Father Dickerson and grant that he and his children may finally meet the departed in that land where trials never enter.
