GOOD CITIZEN
Ripe in Years is Called to His Reward.
George Thomas Bridges, after two years of declining health, died Saturday evening at his home in the southwest part of Franklin township. He had been confined to his bed but a few days. But his family and friends had noticed for some time that his health was failing.
The funeral services were held Monday morning at 11:00 at the Christian church in Trafalgar, conducted by Rev. B. F. Dalley. The burial was at First Mt. Pleasant.
The deceased was the son of George and Matilda (Forsythe) Bridges and was born in this county, February 11, 1831. There are but few persons living in Johnson county, native born, who are as old as Mr. Bridges was, he lacking but a few months of being 80 years old.
Mr. Bridges was married Dec. 18, 1851 to Miss Lydia A. Pefley, who was born in Preble county, Ohio, June 26, 1831. He is survived by his wife and six children, James R., and Scott Bridges, Mrs. John S. Branigin of Indianapolis, Mrs. Bert Owens of this city and Matilda and Florence Bridges. A son, Robert, died two years ago.
"Tom" Bridges, as everyone knew him, was a man of exceptionally fine qualities. He was one who always believed in doing the right thing and he squared his life to that rule. For nineteen years the editor of this paper had known Mr. Bridges. Always once a year, at least during that period he had dropped into this office to renew his subscription. His presence was always welcomed. There was a quiet cheeriness in his nature, something in his presence that always impressed one that he was face to face with a kind, honest, true man who was genuine through and through. He will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends.
