Nita Hays Smith was reared in the Harrisonville MO community but lived also in Kansas, Nebraska, and California before returning to her childhood home the year and a half before her death. She was the daughter of John T. and Mahala Jane Horton Hensley. When a young girl she united with the Antioch Baptist Church, later moving her membership to the Garfield Baptist Church in Kansas City. She was a member of Eastern Star Reseda Chapter #505 in Los Angeles, CA. The former Nita Hensley was united in marriage with Leonard A. Hays, Nov. 11, 1918 and they became the parents of two sons. Her husband died Sept. 25, 1949 and in Nov 1953 she and Harry J. Smith were married, his death occurring July 10, 1957. She was also pre-deceased by her parents, 3 brothers, Jewell, Morris, and Otto Hensley and 2 sisters Mrs. Vera Cox and Mrs. Lola Sohn.
