She was born November 30, 1936 in Murray, Utah to Elvin Coupe and Sarah Conder Armitstead. Gay married Stephen Louis Downs on February 15, 1958 in Copperton, Utah; later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on March 6, 1962.
She graduated from Bingham High School in 1955. Gay was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many leadership positions. She was a visiting teacher for all of her adult life.
Gay enjoyed quilting, clay modeling, ceramics, sewing, scrapbooking, collecting, and spending time with her family. She was a wonderful cook; the family especially liked her salads, candied yams, and cherry pies. She was referred to as "Grandma Cake" by her grandchildren.
Survived by her husband, Steve; children, Craig (Sandi) Downs, Kory (Todd) Meyer, Deanna (Ed) Higham, and Daniel (Wendy) Downs; twelve grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Arvil (Darlene) Armitstead; and sisters, Rea (Jim) Griggs, Austa (Russell) Miller, and Janise Eastman. Preceded in death by her parents, brother, Max Armitstead; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Eastman.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012 in the Union Park First Ward Chapel, 7699 South Chad Street (785 East). Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State Street (100 East), and one hour prior to the services at the church.
Interment: Larkin Sunset Gardens.
